WHAT EXACTLY IS SLOW AFTERNOON?
I’ve heard it so many times from so many photographers, shoot for yourself.
Being a wedding photographer, I rarely got the time to actually do this. I didn’t do it for almost three years before realizing that I’m busy burning out, I need to do something that will reignite my love for photography.
I came up with the idea of hosting a creative afternoon, just for people wanting to do something different, something they won’t get to do on any normal given day.
Slow Afternoon is not a workshop, it is a collaboration with a handful of extremely creative people coming together to give people the opportunity to experiment, learn and gain new inspiration. Nobody will be there to tell you how they do it, nobody will be presenting any type of classes and nobody will guide you in any way. This is your afternoon to be as creative as you want to be.
IS THIS ONLY OPEN TO PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS?
Not at all, my mother-in-law is also joining me :) This is the most incredible opportunity for any newbie to come and experiment with a real-life styled setup, this is the safest place to come and ‘make mistakes’ before attempting a real-life shoot. Anybody is welcome to join in.
WHAT AM I ACTUALLY GOING TO DO?
The idea is for you to have the freedom to style, setup up and take your own photos. This is not a workshop but rather an opportunity for you to take photos the way you want to and experiment with new ideas and styles. From the moment you step inside the venue, you will find the tables, stationery and models all at your disposal and ready to photograph. You will have the luxury of time on your side, you can take time thinking about your photos instead of just running through your standard shot list.
HOW WILL IT WORK?
This shoot is open to photographers and the public. Because we are expecting a diverse group of people to join in, we are creating three different setups each one relating to a different style of photography. (Dark + Romantic // Neutral + Elegant // Vibrant + Lively)
Eight different stationery suites by talented designers Anthos Design Studio, Little North Company, Hello it's Matilda and more (to be confirmed) will be paired with a variety of beautiful styling surfaces.
We also have three couples to play model, and you guessed it, each couple dressed to fit a different style. This way we can create a scene for any type of photographer to join in. Whether you like storytelling or fine-art, there will be something to fit every style.
WHAT DO I ACTUALLY GET IN RETURN FOR MY MONEY?
Have you ever organized a styled shoot? Like a real, full-blown styled shoot? It’s not easy and logistically it’s not fun, we take all the stress and planning out of it for you. You will get the opportunity to do a styled shoot without even batting an eye or losing one night’s sleep because of it (I’m seriously not being dramatic, it has taken a toll on me in the past).
You will get the opportunity to meet new people, chat to service providers and get an afternoon with no emails, no editing, no kids and no hassle. In return, you’ll get beautiful stationery, incredible tablescapes, gorgeous flowers and good coffee, wine and food.

CAN I SHOOT FILM OR TEST OUT NEW EQUIPMENT?
Please do, this is the perfect opportunity to rent gear you had your eye on purchasing and test drive it before actually purchasing the lens/body/accessory. I myself have been experimenting with a new medium for the past year and will also be shooting film on the day.
I recommend renting gear from Sunshine Company in Cape Town, their rental gear is in supreme condition and they have the most friendly staff, you’ll feel like family from day one.
HOW ABOUT THE LOGISTICS?
Taking place 19 July 2018 // The Modern Heirloom, Stellenbosch from 13:00 – 17:00. Refreshments and light snacks will be included. The price range from R 2 500.00 – R 3 750.00.
DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN CAMERA/EQUIPMENT?
Yes, you do. We won’t supply any cameras, lenses or any other photography equipment needed. We only give you the beautiful items to photograph (models, flowers, stationery and tables).
WHAT IF I HAVE TO CANCEL UNEXPECTEDLY?
We get it, life happens. Have a look at our cancelation policy on the Terms & Conditions page. Should something come up and you have already booked your place but you are no longer able to attend, please let us know via email. Unfortunately, we have cutoff dates to be able to receive a full or partial refund due to food and floral purchases.
WHAT IS THE STYLING KIT AND WHAT IS INCLUDED?
Ahhh, the pièces de résistance. This is something I’m very proud of, I teamed up with Papier. Hand Made Fineryand Creative Barn to bring you a special styling kit.
It includes a beautiful styling board from Creative Barn. From Papier, a blank handmade paper invitation set ready for you to print your favourite stationery design at home, a dandelion wax stamp with two vintage wax wicks, hand dyed silk ribbon on a wooden spool, a small gold scissor, one calligraphy pen, shards of white sea glass and a beautiful handmade ring dish. The styling kit is not included in the ticket price but sold as an add-on.
Papier. Hand Made Finery makes the most incredible handmade paper and sources incredible items to bring your lay flat photos to life.
Creative Barn creates styling surfaces that help sets your photographs (whether food, stationery or product shots) above the rest of the market.
CAN I USE THE IMAGES FROM THIS DAY IN MY PORTFOLIO/BLOG/SOCIAL MEDIA?
You most certainly can, you paid to partake so you are the owner of your art. We only ask that you share some of your proudest images with the contributors.
CAN I BOOK MY PLACE ON THE DAY OR AT THE DOOR?
Unfortunately not, this is a pre-book only event. We need a final head count to ensure we have enough food, drinks and styling items for everyone. Registration will close 10 July 2018.
